Early
Days
Disha
began in a small way in June 1992. Disha’s mission was
to safeguard the interests of these slum children by enabling
them to harness their latent potential to achieve their aspirations.
Indeed, under the able guidance of Mrs. R. Roy, Mrs. S. Banerjee,
and a dedicated group of teachers working in English medium
schools, the children showed great promise for development.
In the early stages the classes were held wherever space was
made available by the Lions Club of Manoharpukur Road; verandahs,
garages, stairways etc. Funds were always in short supply
but a trickle of small donations in cash and kind kept the
programme functioning.
Disha
took a big step forward in November 2000 when, with the help
of friends and well-wishers it was able to acquire its own
premises. Thus, Disha moved to a permanent home at 119/ 1B
Manoharpukur Road, Kolkata 700 026. This proved to be the
catalyst for exponential growth. Disha was finally in a position
to embark on expanding its activities in several directions.
The Trust, DISHA FOUNDATION, was established in March 2002
